ABC to read offers a high quality service delivered by highly trained volunteers and are recruiting to support more children in more schools
Primary schools across Berkshire are benefiting from the support that ABC to read volunteer reading mentors provide to children who are struggling with their reading. The volunteers spend one to one time with children, getting to know them and boosting their confidence and skills. Their approach is unique as each volunteer receives full training including safeguarding and confidentiality and ongoing support, creating an unpressured environment with resources that engage the individual child. DBS checks are carried out and 98% of children last year, improved in their reading levels with inspiring results. The charity are widely recognised for what it does and hold the prestigious Queens Award and Investing in Volunteers Award.
The charity also provide workshops to parents, parent helpers and to older students so that they can support younger peers for whom reading is a challenge all are a great opportunity to improve literacy attainment and school cohesion.
