Autism & ADHD Assessment Pathways: A Guide for SENDCOs

Dear Colleague,

Over recent months, we’ve seen more and more families seeking referrals for ADHD and autism assessments, including through Right to Choose (RTC). We know from feedback that these pathways can often feel confusing, and deciding which route is best can be overwhelming for families.

While shorter wait times from RTC or private referrals may appear attractive, they often come with implications that families may not be aware of.

As SENDCO, you’re often the first-person parents turn to. They trust your guidance, and you play a vital role in helping them navigate what can feel like a complex and uncertain process.  Your support in helping them ask the right questions from the get-go, and becoming fully informed of the potential outcomes of each pathway is invaluable.

Our aim is to make sure families are well-informed so they can make the best choice for their child, and that you, as their first point of contact, feel supported and equipped to guide them.

That’s why we’ve created the attached resource, which sets out the different pathways available and the key things to be aware of with each.

By sharing this, we hope to reduce some of the confusion and frustration that can arise later down the line - for families, for schools, and for the services supporting them.

Thank you, as always, for the crucial work you do in supporting children and their families.
