English Subject Leader Network Meeting 6 July 2022
Wednesday 6th July 2022 (key focus - reading comprehension strategies)
4.00 – 5.30pm
Structure and content
The summer term meetings will take a reading focus, exploring key aspects of curriculum and pedagogy.
“Reading comprehension is the ability to make sense of the ideas expressed in a text. It is not the ability to answer certain kinds of questions.” (Literacy KS1 Guidance Report; Education Endowment Foundation, 2020)
“There is zero evidence to support the existence of [such] generic comprehension skills, and yet ‘doing inference on Mondays’ or ‘doing prediction in week four of each term’ continues to be standard practice in many schools.” (The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading; Christopher Such, 2021)
What do we mean by reading comprehension strategies? How are these different to ‘skills?’
We’ll explore what we can learn from reputable research evidence, particularly the recommendation from the EEF Literacy Guidance Reports at KS1 and KS2 to “Teach reading comprehension strategies through modelling and supported practice.”
Please bring along a picture book that you would recommend for reading for pleasure purposes. This might be to read aloud to children or a popular independent read amongst children in your class/school.
News & update key item: the National Professional Qualification for Leading Literacy (NPQLL) and its implications for current and aspiring English Subject Leaders.
