Suspensions and Permanent Exclusions Reach Record High
According to new DfE data, suspensions and permanent exclusions in England have reached their highest levels to date. In 2023–24, the number of suspensions rose by 21 percentage points, reaching 954,952 and permanent exclusions rose by 16.1 percentage points to 10,885.
Persistent disruptive behaviour remains the leading cause for suspensions and permanent exclusions, with the data highlighting a rise in incidents of racism, sexual misconduct, bullying and abuse related to sexual orientation and gender identity. The number of assaults against teachers leading to suspension has also more than doubled since 2020-21, reaching 62,897 in 2023-24.
