Young Carers
Young Carers in Education
Across England, thousands of pupils balance school life with caring for a family member. These young carers often face challenges that affect their attendance, attainment, and wellbeing.
- On average, young carers miss 23 days of school each year, with nearly half persistently absent.
- They are twice as likely to be suspended or excluded as their peers.
- Many report bullying, lateness, and difficulties completing homework due to their caring responsibilities.
From November 2025, Ofsted’s new inspection framework places inclusion at its core. Schools will be expected to show how they identify and support vulnerable groups – including young carers – in attendance, behaviour, achievement, and personal development.
What school leaders can do:
- Appoint a Young Carer Lead/Champion.
- Develop a clear Young Carers Policy.
- Ensure accurate identification and census recording.
- Provide targeted pastoral, academic, and wellbeing support.
- Train staff to recognise and respond to the needs of young carers.
By recognising and supporting young carers, schools can improve their outcomes, meet Ofsted expectations, and most importantly, ensure these pupils have the same opportunities as their peers.
