RE Updates

The National Society has updated its guidance on withdrawal from RE. In addition to the previous advice to grant withdrawal requests without delay or question, there is further helpful guidance which is summarised below:
Clear policies and procedures are essential - ensure:

  • The school has a published RE policy including withdrawal procedures.
  • Information is accessible to parents, including translations if needed.
  • The process does not place an “undue burden” on parents—this is a principle reinforced in recent legal rulings.
  • Accurate records are kept of withdrawal requests and actions taken.

Alternative arrangements must be reasonable:

  • Withdrawn pupils must be suitably supervised, where possible, remaining in class with appropriate alternative work.
  • Activities should support SMSC development, not act as academic catch‑up.
  • Arrangements must not incur additional cost or disruption to the school.
  • For trips: pupils should be supervised as they would for any missed visit.
