The Department for Education has issued updated guidance on the safe and effective use of
AI in schools, emphasising that it should support - not replace - professional judgement. AI presents clear opportunities to reduce workload, particularly in areas such as lesson planning and while also enabling more personalised and high-quality teaching and learning.

However, the guidance also sets strong expectations around safety and risk management.
Schools must ensure AI use aligns with safeguarding requirements in Keeping Children Safe in Education, and that robust data protection practices are in place, particularly when handling personal data.

A strategic, whole-school approach is encouraged, supported by DfE training and guidance to build AI literacy and confidence across staff, including leadership.
