One minute guide to the SEND reports for governors
What?
A report should be produced for governors at least annually. It should include the school’s provision for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and the progress pupils with SEND are making.
It could include:
-
how many or what percentage of students are coded as ‘K’ or ‘E’ on the school census
-
the above information for the previous year (for comparison)
-
total number of students with SEND in the school
-
total number of students with an education, health and care plan (EHCP)
-
total number of students without an EHCP
-
number of requests for statutory assessment that year
-
number of requests for statutory assessment agreed that year
-
total number of students with each need within the SEND Code of Practice, for example the total number with cognition and learning needs, communication and interaction needs, social, emotional and mental health needs, and physical or sensory needs
-
the above information as a percentage across the whole school
-
information on the SEND processes in the school, for example how the graduated response is enacted
-
provisions used throughout the year to support students with SEND
-
effectiveness of provisions used
-
SEND attainment information
-
SEND attainment compared to non-SEND attainment
-
information on parent and carer collaboration
-
training in SEND provided during the year
-
SEND attendance and comparison to non-SEND attendance
-
information on SEND funding available and used
-
information on external agencies engaged with
-
SEND improvement priorities for the following year
Who?
The report should be created by the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) and shared with all governors. It would also be helpful to share the report with all staff too, to ensure that everyone in the school is aware of the effectiveness of SEND provision within the school.
Why?
The report helps governors to scrutinise and monitor SEND effectively.
How?
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead does not have a set template for SENCos to use when reporting to governors, but an example that can be used or adapted can be found on the Windsor and Maidenhead Leadership Update website.
A template is also available on the nasen website, which has free membership. Schools are also welcome to create their own template.
